Slideshow: Across CIÉ & GNR(I) lines in the 1960s – by Ciarán Cooney (25/10/18)
On Thursday 25 October 2018, the IRRS’s Hon. Photographic Archivist Ciarán Cooney will present a selection of images recorded by the late IRRS Treasurer Norman McAdams, featuring scenes on the railway lines of CIÉ and the ex Great Northern Railway during the early 1960s, when steam and diesel traction operated side-by-side on the extensive Irish rail network prior to the major closures of 1963 and 1965. The show begins at 7:30pm at IRRS HQ, Heuston Station, Dublin.
Mainline and branchline scenes feature throughout the slideshow, with unusual workings such as GAA excursions and pilgrimage trains, as well as the ‘everyday’ passenger and goods workings, with locations ranging from the Edenderry branch to the GNR(I)’s ‘Derry Road’, as well as many other lines no longer existing. Diesel traction includes all of CIÉ’s modern traction fleet, such as Metrovick locomotives, as well as GM engines of the B121 & B141 Classes, as well as remaining steam engines, while the GNR(I) section features steam and diesel railcars.
**Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances the presentation on the construction of the Luas Cross City line, due to take place on this date of 25 October, has been postponed to a later date.** However, the above alternative slideshow is another opportunity to see the sights and scenes recorded by Norman McAdams, which was presented to the IRRS London Area in December 2014. The updated list of meetings for 2018-2019 in Dublin, Cork and London are also now published.
The IRRS is located opposite Heuston Station carpark, Dublin, on the northside of the station adjacent to the River Liffey
